Analyzing Web Logs

Although computers can log every action, making sense out of the data proves to be far from easy in most cases. Fortunately, Theme offers the solution to this problem. Theme can take both the order and timing of actions into account, and can deal with variation in both. We used our own website to provide an example of this application. During a 24-hour logging period, our website was visited by 450 people. Theme discovered several patterns reflecting the 'surf-behavior' of different groups of visitors. Unlike other analysis-tools Theme takes timing into account when analyzing patterns, and has furthermore no difficulties with integrating apparently irrelevant variations. Thus potential uses of this method are in the design and evaluation of websites and applications. [Click here for full paper]
